Prof. Shankar Venkataramani, PhD (Univ of Maryland, College Park)
Prof. Venkataramani is currently a Professor of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Arizona. He has been teaching for more than two decades in the field of mathematics. He has mentored many undergraduate and graduate students and overseen several Ph.D. candidates as well as postdocs. He was recently awarded a fellowship from Simons Foundation and is on a year-long sabbatical during the 2018-2019 academic year, conducting lectures in several locations around the world. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago, IL, and a researcher at the James Franck Institute, also at the University of Chicago. Prof. Venkataramani completed his B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and his Masters and Ph.D. in Physics from The University of Maryland, College Park. His interests span many areas of mathematics and physical science, including differential equations, geometry, materials, and stochastic modeling of complex systems. Prof. Venkataramani is the recipient of a career award from the National Science Foundation and a fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. His research has been applied to many problems in optics, oil and gas, hurricanes tracking, and material science. He has co-authored more than fifty publications and presentations.
